I like to think of myself as someone who cares about the environment. You know, I set my recycling bin out on the curb and sometimes remember to take my canvas grocery bags to the store. But then Anne told me about a PBS special on pollution that completely disturbed me. Apparently there is a massive garbage dump of plastic in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In a nutshell, pretty much every piece of plastic ever made is still on the planet since it doesn't decompose. A lot of it is concentrated in an area of the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. Fish and birds mistake it for food and are dying by the thousands. I can't do it justice, you really have to see for yourself to believe it. You can check out a youtube video by clicking here. Or look at the article in Best Life magazine here.
