Happy Birthday Ba Ngoai!!!

Ba Ngoai (Liem's grandmother) is 90 years old today.

She is an amazing woman who has lived a very eventful life. In 1975 she left Vietnam with Liem's family, leaving behind 5 grown children and their families. Since that time her 2 other daughters and one son have joined her in the U.S. She still has 2 sons living in Vietnam and one son in Australia. Liem and his brother and sisters were fortunate to spend their childhood living with their grandmother.

In the time that I have known her, I am constantly amazed by her energy and devotion to her family. She does more than many 60-year-olds and she just started to get gray hair in the last couple of years. She travels by herself, most recently to Minnesota when she was 89 years old. And she can still play blackjack until the wee hours of the morning. One of my favorite memories of her was in 1992 when she traveled with me and Liem to Florida to visit Liem's Aunt Trinh. Ba Ngoai sat in the back seat of a Geo Metro for the 18 hour drive and never complained once. She just kept handing us sandwiches and sticky rice and other goodies from the cooler she packed.

These photos were taken at a party in Grand Rapids, Michigan last summer. Most of Ba Ngoai's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered in her honor. I wish we could all be with you today, Ba Ngoai , to help you blow out the 90 candles on your cake.
We love you very much!
